The Ultimate Tattoo Aftercare Guide: Heal Like a Pro

So, you've just left the chair with a fresh piece of art. Congratulations! But remember: the artist only does 50% of the work. The other 50%—the distinct difference between a vibrant, crisp heals and a patchy, faded one—is entirely up to you. Here is the industry-standard protocol we swear by at Bad Apples.

Step 1: The Bandage / Second Skin

Your artist will apply a protective layer. If it's standard cling wrap and a dri-loc pad, leave it on for 2–4 hours. If we've used a 'Second Skin' adhesive (like Saniderm or Dermalize), you can typically leave this on for 3–5 days, provided it doesn't leak or irritate your skin.

PRO TIP: Plasma (ink-colored fluid) building up under the adhesive is normal. It looks gross, but it's liquid gold for healing. If it leaks, however, take it off immediately to prevent bacteria from entering.

Step 2: The Wash (Crucial!)

When you remove the bandage, do it in a clean environment (i.e., not a pub bathroom). Wash your hands thoroughly first. Then, using lukewarm water and UNSCENTED, antibacterial liquid soap (like Dr. Bronner's Unscented or Dial Gold), gently wash the tattoo.

Use your fingertips only—no washcloths or loofahs, they are bacteria traps. Wash until the area no longer feels 'slimy' (that's the plasma). Rinse with cold water to close the pores.

Step 3: Drying & Moisturizing

Pat—do not rub—the area dry with a clean paper towel. Do not use a bath towel; they carry lint and bacteria. Let it air dry for another 10 minutes.

Once bone dry, apply a VERY thin layer of aftercare ointment. We recommend specific tattoo balms or plain white lotion (like Lubriderm or Cetaphil). If it looks shiny or wet, you've used too much. Blot the excess off.

The Golden Rules of Healing

  • NO scratching. If it itches, slap it gently or apply a cold compress.
  • NO submerging. Showers are fine; baths, pools, and oceans are absolutely forbidden for 2 weeks.
  • NO direct sunlight. Fresh tattoos burn instantly and fade permanently.
  • NO tight synthetic clothing. Let it breathe.

If you see redness spreading outward, feel excessive heat radiating after day 3, or see yellow/green discharge, contact a doctor immediately. Better safe than sorry.
