Everyone has a different pain threshold. What feels like a tickle to a construction worker might feel like fire to an IT consultant. However, biology is universal. Here is the definitive ranking of pain spots, based on thousands of clients.
Low Pain (The 'Cat Scratch' Zone)
These areas have thick skin and fewer nerve endings. Great for first-timers.
- Outer Shoulder / Deltoid
- Outer Thigh
- Forearm (Outer)
- Calf (Back)
Medium Pain (The 'Spicy' Zone)
You'll definitely feel these. You might need to grit your teeth now and then.
- Shin
- Ankle
- Stomach
- Inner Bicep (very tender!)
High Pain (The 'Ouch' Zone)
Areas where skin is thin and close to bone/nerves. Not recommended for your first tattoo unless you are stubborn.
- Ribs / Side
- Top of Foot
- Kneecap & Elbow (vibrates the bone)
- Armpit
- Sternum / Chest Center
Remember: Pain is temporary. The art is forever. Don't compromise your placement just because you are scared of a few hours of discomfort.
