Why Ink Quality Matters: Preventing Fade and Allergies

7 min read

Not all ink is created equal. In the age of Amazon-bought tattoo kits, the market is flooded with counterfeit and low-quality pigments. At Bad Apples, we are obsessive about what we put in your skin. Here is why it matters.

Acrylic vs. Organic Pigments

Cheap inks are often acrylic-based (basically plastic). They look bright initially but are notorious for causing allergic reactions and usually degrade into a blurry mess. Professional inks are typically organic or mineral-based pigments suspended in a strictly controlled carrier fluid (witch hazel or glycerin).

The 'Blue/Green' Black

Ever seen an old tattoo that looks green? That's cheap black ink. Historically, black ink was made by mixing dark blue or green pigments. Over time, the black fades and leaves the base colour behind. Modern high-quality blacks (like Dynamic or Eternal) are carbon-based and stay true black for decades.

Heavy Metals & Safety

Low-quality inks often contain dangerously high levels of heavy metals like lead and arsenic, which can cause long-term health issues. We strictly use REACH-compliant inks (the highest EU safety standard) to ensure your safety.

Your body is a temple. Don't paint the walls with cheap paint. Ask your artist what brand they use. If they can't tell you, run.
